Hapuku Marine Research Laboratory
Agency funded: Kaikōura Marine Mammal Foundation
Moana Mark is supporting local science by funding facilities and equipment at the Hapuku Marine Research Laboratory, giving students and researchers direct access to New Zealand's most unique marine ecosystems.
Did you know?
Kaikōura sits next to the Hikurangi Trench, a deep ocean canyon teeming with marine life. It’s home to New Zealand's largest and deepest marine reserve, a whale sanctuary, and the South Island's biggest fur seal colony.
What is the lab for?
Perched on cliffs above Mangamaunu, the Hapuku Marine Research Laboratory supports marine scientists studying everything from whale behaviour to fur seal health. It's a base for postgraduate students and visiting researchers working in nearby protected marine areas.
The lab includes a wet lab, seminar space, computers, and specialised equipment, including a four-metre walk-in freezer for preserving biological samples. It offers free access to approved researchers and supports collaboration across projects.
What facilities does it offer?
Research done here helps protect some of Aotearoa's most biodiverse marine environments. It also provides educational materials and data for local councils and tourism operators, boosting public awareness and sustainable decision-making.
Why is this important?
Moana Mark has already funded the build and continues to support lab operations, including electricity, internet, and research supplies. Your donation helps keep the lab running and accessible to the next generation of marine scientists.
How does your donation help?
Help power research where it happens, on the coast, in the field, and for the future.
